GOAL OF THE STUDY: To reduce flood risk to the North Adams community by rehabilitating, replacing, or removing aging flood risk management infrastructure, while leveraging opportunities for aquatic ecosystem restoration and community recreation. The focus of this study is to reduce flood risk to public infrastructure; important societal resources, such as Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) and historic properties; disadvantaged communities; and the broader local community and to reduce economic and social impacts from riverine flooding from the Hoosic River in North Adams, Massachusetts.

GOAL OF THE LISTENING SESSION: A multi-year feasibility study is now underway by the US Army Corps of Engineers, the City of North Adams and Hoosic River Revival to evaluate options to modernize the Hoosic River flood risk management system in North Adams. Modernization is intended to enhance flood protection and climate resilience, and restore river ecology displaced by the concrete flood chutes. The study area encompasses the entire extent of the Hoosic River in North Adams, and it is expected that a recommended modernization plan will be available by the end of 2025.

To inform this work, the City and Hoosic River Revival are seeking public input on the kinds of access and recreation opportunities that would be most meaningful to area residents. This community listening session is planned to share information about the feasibility study progress, to show examples of placemaking, and to explore the community’s interests in riverside access, recreation, culture and community gathering spaces. We want to hear your voice!

All are welcome. No RSVP needed. Questions? Email info@hoosicriverrevival.org
