Mission

“ Imagine the river is the gem in the center of our city.”

Several years ago, a group of residents in North Adams, Massachusetts, came together and agreed that we should join with other ‘river cities’ and make our section of the Hoosic River a downtown asset. The goal of the Hoosic River Revival Coalition is to make the river suitable for fishing, boating and swimming, to have it bordered by biking and walking trails running through parkland, and for it to be a place where people come for business and socializing.

The river is a natural attribute in the city, but the 60 year-old concrete flood control chutes that once saved the city, now hide it from view. The Coalition believes it is important to have a flood control system. However, the Coalition is committed to working with the Northern Berkshire community, professional engineering and planning firms, and the U. S. Corps of Engineers to develop a 21st Century flood control design for our river.

We believe that the redesign of the flood chutes, the revitalization of the river, and the resulting economic revival of our downtown would complete the picture of a city with outstanding recreational, cultural, and business opportunities. Working in concert with our city / state officials and the major stakeholders in our city, like Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA), the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA), Develop North Adams (DNA), and The Partnership for North Adams, our goal is to make the river and its corridor a vital part of our beautiful city, just as they have done in Providence, RI, Greenville, NC, and Lowell, Massachusetts.

We invite you to learn about the work we have done in the past three years, to look at the pictures of the flood control/river revitalization projects that inspire us, and to share your thoughts about this project with us.
